Face your Feelings: Is Emotional Awareness the Key to Healing?

Yesterday, I was deeply moved by a thought-provoking post shared by a beloved friend and mentor. The post, authored by a PhD, delved into the complex topic of our innate inclination to suppress, evade, or rationalize our experiences of trauma and grief. It sparked a profound reflection within me, particularly in relation to how my four children coped with the loss of their father.



About two years following this tragic event, upon the recommendations of close friends and family members, I decided to enroll my children in a therapeutic program. This program involved weekly group sessions, supplemented by individual counseling sessions every other week, each lasting for about 30 minutes.


The experience of accompanying my children on this journey towards healing and understanding was both challenging and enlightening. Witnessing their emotional growth and resilience in the face of such profound loss was a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Through the guidance and support provided by the therapy sessions, my children were able to navigate their grief, confront their emotions, and gradually find a sense of peace and acceptance.


As a parent, it was a humbling experience to witness the potential transformative power of therapy in helping my children process their emotions and come to terms with their father's absence. The journey was not easy, but it was a crucial step towards their healing and well-being. It reinforced the importance of seeking professional help and support during times of deep emotional turmoil and highlighted the resilience and adaptability of the human heart in the face of adversity.


After approximately a month of attending therapy sessions, my children began to show signs of frustration and weariness with the process. The dynamics within the group had evolved to the point where my two youngest children distanced themselves from the older siblings. In the culminating group session, a poignant moment unfolded when my daughter, who had just celebrated her 10th birthday, bravely stood up and addressed the therapist. With a raw vulnerability, she articulated her inner turmoil, saying, "I am struggling to understand how to integrate my father's death into my life. I need reassurance that my emotions are valid. Your attempts to redirect my thoughts and feelings are dismissive. The reality of my father's absence brings me immense sorrow, and I refuse to be told otherwise."


This heartfelt declaration from my daughter underscored the profound impact of loss on a child's emotional landscape. It shed light on the complexities of grief and the importance of validating one's feelings during the healing process. The therapist's approach was challenged, prompting a deeper exploration of how individuals cope with bereavement and the significance of acknowledging and processing emotions authentically.



It was at that moment that I understood that CBT and DVT therapy were not the most suitable choices for my children. They accepted that losing their father had become a part of their identity, and they were not willing to ignore or reconsider it. Instead, they sought to embrace, articulate, and work through their emotions completely, acknowledging that sadness was a natural part of life, but that it was manageable because such experiences are a reality.


Life is a journey filled with difficulties, challenges, and triumphs. It is natural to feel overwhelmed at times and to seek solace by setting things aside temporarily. Taking a step back can provide a fresh perspective, allowing you to approach situations with a renewed sense of clarity. However, it is crucial to remember that avoidance is not a long-term solution. To profoundly move forward and grow, it is essential to confront and process the experiences that shape us.


Every moment, whether joyful or painful, contributes to the intricate tapestry of our lives. By embracing these moments and integrating them into our narrative, we not only honor our journey but also empower ourselves to heal and evolve. Ignoring or suppressing our emotions and experiences can lead to a sense of disconnection from our true selves, leaving us adrift in a sea of unresolved trauma.


Therefore, while it is understandable to take breaks and reframe our thoughts, it is equally important to engage with our innermost selves and acknowledge the impact of our experiences. By doing so, we can reclaim our authenticity, resilience, and sense of purpose, avoiding the shadows that threaten to engulf us. Embrace your story, for it is uniquely yours to tell and to shape.





Every individual is a complex tapestry woven from a myriad of experiences, both joyful and challenging. Sometimes, life presents us with such a vast array of lessons and burdens that we may feel overwhelmed, as if we are sinking beneath the weight of it all. Yet, it is crucial to acknowledge and engage with our emotions, allowing ourselves to fully feel the highs and lows they bring, and extract valuable insights from them. These experiences, whether positive or negative, play a significant role in shaping the narrative of our lives, influencing our perspectives and decisions.

Progress can be made by taking each day as it comes, or by approaching challenges one step at a time, perhaps even one therapy session at a time. The key lies in understanding that true personal development and advancement can only occur once we have embraced and processed the entirety of our past experiences, integrating them into our present selves.


By delving deep into our emotions, reflecting on our past, and learning from our encounters, we pave the way for a more profound understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Each experience, no matter how difficult, offers an opportunity for growth and transformation, allowing us to evolve into stronger, more resilient individuals. Embracing our past and present enables us to move forward with clarity, purpose, and a renewed sense of self-awareness.


Learning to rethink a situation and finding a positive perspective to smile through challenges can be likened to applying a fresh coat of yellow paint over a black wall. Initially, this approach may bring temporary relief and brightness, much like how the paint covers the darkness. However, just as the black wall's original color may seep through over time, the true depth of emotions and experiences can resurface when least expected. It is essential to acknowledge and integrate trauma and grief into your narrative as they occur, rather than suppressing them. By embracing these emotions in the present moment, you embark on a journey of self-assimilation, uniting your mental, emotional, and physical aspects into a cohesive process. This conscious engagement allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience, fostering genuine growth and understanding.



It is an undeniable truth that throughout our lives, we may encounter traumas and horrors that are so overwhelming that our immediate response is to shut down and enter a survival mode. This instinctual reaction is a natural defense mechanism designed to shield us from the full impact of the distressing experiences. However, as time passes, these suppressed memories have a way of resurfacing, demanding to be acknowledged and processed.


As the saying goes, "You must feel, to heal." This simple yet profound statement encapsulates the essence of emotional healing. Ignoring or burying our emotions may provide temporary relief, but the unresolved pain will linger beneath the surface, affecting us in ways we may not even realize. True healing requires us to confront our feelings head-on, to delve deep into the core of our emotions, and to allow ourselves to experience the full spectrum of our pain.



Attempting to outsmart or outwit our emotions is a futile endeavor. Emotions have a way of persisting until they are recognized and acknowledged. By embracing our feelings, by allowing ourselves to sit with discomfort, and by bravely exploring the depths of our emotional landscape, we pave the way for healing to take place. It is through this process of facing our inner turmoil with courage and compassion that we can begin to release the grip of past traumas and move towards a place of wholeness and healing.
